Soap Box Derby

Early in 2005 The Rotary Club of Waitakere City successfully raised funds to contribute towards the completion of the new West Auckland Hospice on Te Atatu Peninsula. This was one of many Rotary projects celebrating 100 years of world wide Rotary community service.
Our most successful fundraiser was the participation in the All American Soap Box Derby held in Westgate Drive. With the help of local businesses, local car and radio clubs, the Waitakere City Council, Waitakere Licensing Trust and twenty local schools, so successful was the event we had funds left to support the other end of the community spectrum - our young people.
Contributions were made to children and young adults wishing to partake in activities such as Outward Bound, Spirit of Adventure, Cultural Exchange, Youth Leadership, and youth groups.
In particular a pilot programme involving at risk children and young adults organised by the New Zealand Police was funded and proved to be a great success. Approximately 60 youngsters in West Auckland were steered along a more desirable course and hopefully out of future trouble.

Our Club also supports the Improving School Attendance Programme an organisation charged with controlling truancy in our community. Whilst Central and Local government contribute funds for some expenses there is always a shortfall in resources needed for running successful Youth Development programmes.

The Rotary Club of Waitakere City seeks your help in running another successful Soapbox Derby in March 2006.

We need enthusiastic community and school participation, business sponsorship, Council and Trust support, parent/caregiver participation, volunteers to run the event.

The date has been set for Sunday 19th March 2006. The Rotary Club of Waitakere City is busy planning for next year, and our first step is to contact all those who participated in 2005.

The Club is now accepting entries for the 2006 Soapbox Derby.

We would still like more sponsors/school tents and stalls trackside, and fun races between heats. This is an ideal venue for demonstrating and marketing new products. If you would like to have a space allocated we would be happy to discuss this with you. Likewise if you have any willing groups or individuals who have vehicles suitable for fun racing we would love to hear from you.

Thank you for your support for the 2005 event, and I sincerely hope that you will take up the challenge for 2006!

If you have any queries please contact me on 832 1953 or at kelvin.angela@xtra.co.nz

Yours sincerely

Angela Brown Promotions Manager

WAITAKERE ROTARY CONTINUES TO SUPPORT

SPORTS YOUTH PROGRAM

Waitakere City Rotary Club has thrown its weight behind an innovative new sports project that aims to make better citizens out of 12 young boys deemed to be ӡt the crossroads in their livesԮ

The project instigated by the Harvey Norman NZ Breakers has also received the backing of Sport Waitakere, Waitakere Police and Waitakere City Council through its Community Action on Youth and Drugs Program (CAYAD).

The NZ Breakers assembled the 12 young boys after going through a selection process with Waitakere City Police and Sport Waitakere.

The boys were then invited to join a basketball team coached by Breakers team member, Blake Truslove and Breakers assistant coach, Wayne Brown.

As NZ Breakers General manager, Peter Chapman, stated the team is far from being a social group of young basketballers coming together once a week to play hoops.

ӆirstly every player had to sign a contract with us that guaranteed his commitment to the program, to his family, his school and to the police,ԠPeter said.

Ӊt was made clear from the outset that to remain a part of the team they had to work hard to make themselves better citizens and to be responsible at all times for their actions. Their reward is to part of the most professional social basketball team in the country,Ԡhe said.

Indeed the Breakers have set to team up to be the envy of every other junior side.

Firstly the boys got to design their own playing uniform and to name their team. Ironically they called themselves the Saints.

They were then kitted out with the latest Nike basketball shoes and Russell Athletic muscle tops and T shirts.

The next step was to set the boys up in the NZ Breakers changeroom at the Trusts Stadium with their names going up on individual lockers alongside the likes of Tall Blacks captain, Pero Cameron.

The program commenced back in January and opened with the rookie team playing its first game as the curtain raiser to the NZ Breakers NBL match.

ӏne parent told me that their son was so excited about the first match that he kept the entire family up to 2am talking about the experience,ԠChapman said.

ӓo far we are happy with the progress of the Youth Assist Program, but we intend to interview all parties involved later in the year to see where we can improve things. The support of Rotary and CAYAD has been invaluable in getting this program up and without this support the project may not have happened,Ԡhe said.

Mr Chapman said that the Youth Assist Program offered itself as a potential draft for similar programs being established throughout the country.

ӗe started with young boys and basketball, it would be nice to see an elite netball franchise adopt the program next for teenage girls who are having trouble making the right decisions in their lives.Լ/p>

On February 23 1905, the founder of Rotary Paul Harris, hosted the first ever meeting of a group of business and professional men. 100 years later thousands of Rotary Clubs worldwide began celebrating their past achievements, and embracing future challenges

The Rotary Club of Waitakere City had a host of different activities to mark this occasion.

  • First Light - With the advantage of New Zealand being the first country worldwide to usher in a new day, we hosted a 6.45 am ceremony on the 23rd February, which took place at The Trust Stadium, Waitakere. Those present were Rotary members and Civic and business leaders from out West.

  • Waitakere City Council named a road with a Centennial theme.

  • NZ Post issued a 100 years of Rotary stamp.

  • A local school was planted  with a Rotary Centennial Grove.

  • A new flag pole was erected in our Rotary World Peace Park.

  • We presented the West Auckland Hospice with funds raised to furnish the new Hospice House which was under construction in Te Atatu Peninsula. This has been our major Centennial project, with funds raised by the Soap Box Derby.
