Soap Box Derby
On the 20 th of March 2005 we held the second anual West Auckland Soap Box
Derby. This event has proven to be an overwhelming success on all levels, including
fundraising, sponsor's satisfaction, schools participation and community entertainment. |

|
Local businesses sponsor a kitset car into 20 nominated west Auckland schools. The school
requirements are to provide a team of 5 - 10 students from year 6 to 10, and a teacher to
oversee the project. The students then assemble the car, paint it in the sponsors and/or
school colours and logos, and race it on behalf of the sponsor.

Race day for 2006 has been set to Sunday 19th March. Due to it's
success we have had many enquiries from both schools and businesses wishing to participate
next year, but we are giving first opportunities to all those who supported us in 2005. To
avoid disappointment, we would like to hear from all those interested.

The Rotary Club of Waitakere City sees this project as an ideal
opportunity to bring businesses and schools together, to the benefit of the local
community. Of the 2005 event, 100% of funds donated will be shared by projects we support.
Half the funds will be presented to the West Auckland Hospice to go towards furnishing the
new Hospice House which is due to be completed by July 12 in Te Atatu Peninsula.
The balance will be shared by youth development programs out west. We are proud and
excited to be a supporter of The Saints basketball team. This is a joint project together
with the WCC, police and The Breakers Basketball team, and we have established a team
players who were deemed 'on the edge', with the expectation that this team will give them
the incentive to do well in all areas of their lives.
Race day 2005 was once again a huge success. Prizes awarded were:
1st: Jarrod Ryder, Whenuapai School
2nd: Andrew Boere, Swanson Primary
3rd: Oliver Harding-Sheath, Massey High
Most Impressive School: Lincoln Heights
School
Best Design: Riverhead School
Best Teamwork: Kelston Boys
Best Cheerleaders: Hobsonville School
Rotary Waitakere was also priviledged to be hosting the
National Finals this year. Once the west's top 16 drivers were determined by time trials,
they went on the race against the finalists from both the North Shore event, and also the
winner from Whangarei, who together with his car, was transported by helicopter to the
finals in the afternoon.

The overall winner of the Soap Box Derby was Jarrod
Ryder from Whenuapai School, racing for his sponsors Smith & Partners, McLaren Guise,
and Patten Brumby Ltd. Jarrod's win gives him the opportunity to travel to Ohio, USA, to
compete in the All American Soap Box Derby in July.
